THE MAGIC CARPET RIDE THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

For this chapter we are going to rewind the timeline to a year prior to the closed door meeting you read about in the last chapter. This chapter starts in the summer of 2015 and will end where the last chapter left off, October 2016.

There were times during the dark years when I didn’t care about living. I say that because in true purgatorial fashion, I didn’t want to die either. This space of in-between left me in a state of non-action and I was stuck. I loved my life and the people in it. The serious thought of truly ending my life never happened, but living was simply so hard. Because I believe we are souls, I fantasized that death might be liberating from all the pain and suffering in this human body. Fortunately, I didn’t stay in that darkness for too long, the light found me.

I had come back from vacation in the summer of 2015 and Rachel, who I spoke of in the last chapter, had left a packet of kundalini teacher–certification info and registration forms on my desk. It was placed on my keyboard with a Post-it note that said, “I think you are meant to do this. :), Rachel”

An instant “Yes!” registered in my body—I knew without a doubt I had to do this, she was right. The light within me was trying to break through and I knew it. I just needed to run it by my husband to make sure he was cool with the schedule that would require me to be gone every third weekend for nine months. He supported my decision and I registered.

I studied under Deva Kaur, a first-generation student of Yogi Bhajan. Deva eventually became my mentor in the areas of yogic lifestyle and all things under Universal law, but seeing her for the first time scared me. She was tall, regal, and reminded me of a queen. She was older, like a mother, if I had to guess, she was probably in her early 60s. I’d never thought about it until I sat down to write this, but Deva’s energy is very similar to Mother Kali’s: an equal balance of firmness and compassion. It makes me laugh now but I spent the first year or so being afraid of her.

I remember the first day of my kundalini teacher training when Deva explained that this process takes nine months. She went on to say, “That is how long it takes to give birth to a human life, and how long it will take for your rebirth.” I remember being so nervous and so scared at the same time. It sounded like I was about to embark on some magic carpet ride that would change my life.
